We were warned to be careful with the gearbox as they were new and unproven and both cars retired with gearbox failures. The McLaren team was commissioned by Ford to build a lightweight version of the GT40 for possible use in 1966. I did the testing of this and drove it in some Can Am type events in the US in late '65.

Ford wanted to organise a true 'dead heat' to have two cars win the race, essentially. So Miles gave back those 3 laps, leading to the story of the finish as shown. Ford dominated the Le Mans 24 Hours race in 1966, winning it for the first time, and taking all the podium places with its updated MkII and stellar driver line-up. But instead of euphoria on the podium, Chris Amon and Bruce McLaren , who were classified first, were strangely subdued.

British-born Ken Miles was a gifted race car engineer and driver. Through his work for Carroll Shelby, Miles got involved in Ford's GT racing program. Miles won the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1966, and he placed second at Le Mans. Miles died in a crash while testing Ford's J-Car later that year. 18 June 1966 - 19 June 1966.
